Cancer portrays the crab that, in Greek mythology, engaged Hercules in combat during his confrontation with the multi-headed Hydra, only to be crushed underfoot. As the faintest constellation within the zodiac, its most luminous star, Beta (β) Cnc, has a magnitude of 3.5.
