This constellation portrays the bull, a manifestation of the Greek god Zeus when he assumed this form to abduct Princess Europa of Phoenicia. According to the myth, Zeus swam to Crete with the princess astride his back. The constellation specifically represents the visible front half of the bull above the waves of the Mediterranean.
