Boötes is a constellation portraying a man herding a bear, symbolized by Ursa Major. Its brightest star, Arcturus, derives its name from the Greek for “bear guard.” The northern section of Bootes once held the faint stars forming the defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis, the mural quadrant, which lent its name to the Quadrantid meteor shower, radiating from this region every January.
